Iran and nuclear: return to “full respect” of the agreement, ask Europeans

Paris, London and Berlin recalled, in a joint press release, their attachment to the nuclear agreement with Iran while asking Tehran to return “to full respect” concerning this dossier.

France, the United Kingdom and Germany together called on Sunday Iran to return “to full respect” of its obligations under the agreement on Iranian nuclear power, which Tehran began to unravel in a context of tensions with the United States. “Today, our message is clear: we remain committed” to the nuclear agreement “and to its preservation; we urge Iran to reverse all measures inconsistent with the agreement; we call on Iran to refrain from any further violent or proliferation action; and we remain ready to engage in dialogue with Iran on this basis in order to preserve the stability of the region, “said the three countries in a joint declaration which reaffirms their position on the matter.

France , the United Kingdom and Germany are the three European countries which signed in 2015, with the United States, China and Russia, the nuclear deal with Iran, which Donald Trump decided to exit in 2018. Donald Trump recently called on Europeans to slam the door on the deal and step up their own military effort in the Middle East. Paris, London and Berlin prefer to reiterate their attachment to the agreement, while considering it “essential that Iran returns to full respect of its obligations under the agreement”.

“We have expressed our deep concern at the actions taken by Iran in violation of its commitments since July 2019. These actions must be reversed, “add the three European capitals.

In favor of de-escalation

Tehran said on January 5 that it no longer felt bound by any limit “on the number of its centrifuges” used for the production of nuclear fuel. This announcement was made two days after the elimination of Iranian general Qassem Soleimani in Baghdad, by an American drone fire, culminating in a rise in tensions between Tehran and Washington . London, Berlin and Paris underline in their declaration their “readiness” to work “in favor of de-escalation and stability in the region”. They reaffirm the need to “respond – through diplomacy and in a meaningful way – to common concerns about Iran's destabilizing regional activities, including those related to its missile programs.”

“We will have to also define a long-term framework for Iran’s nuclear program, ”they said. In their press release, Europeans cite the role played by “the bodies of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards (CGRI) and the Al-Quds force”, responsible for Tehran's external operations, in the “ recent events” who “have highlighted Iran's destabilizing role in the region “. Finally, Berlin, Paris and London say “take note of the announcement by Iran concerning the destruction of the UIA PS flight 752”, Tehran having recognized on Saturday having accidentally shot down the Ukrainian airliner on Wednesday, causing the death of 176 people.

The Europeans warned them days they could decide to trigger a dispute settlement mechanism under the nuclear deal, which could lead to the reinstatement of sanctions by the UN Security Council, if Iran does not return to compliance its commitments.
