Challenge Cup: the UBB is qualified!

Union Bordeaux-Bègles defeated Edinburgh (32 – 17) this Saturday afternoon in Chaban-Delmas, during the 5th day of Challenge Cup.

By winning the offensive bonus (4 tries) and depriving the Scots of the defensive bonus, the Girondins thus won a historic qualification for the quarter-finals. They are sure to finish in first place in pool 3, even before the last day that will see them move to the Wasps (next Saturday).

The match

The UBB is put under entry pressure by the Scots, painful in the ground game, who open the score on a Van der penalty Walt (0–3, 11 e). But Jalibert answers him (3–3, 19 e), before hitting a cross at the foot towards Ducuing. This one serves Radradra who arrives launched. The three-quarter center of Fiji performs a race of 50 meters and tears off to flatten in the in-goal (10 – 3, 25 e) . Just before half time, Lamerat tears off a ball, Radradra pierces the defensive curtain and serves Cordero who spins to register the second Girondin try (17 – 3, 39 e).

In the second half, the UBB accelerates, settles down within 22 Scottish meters. But a pass from Cazeaux is intercepted by Bennett. The sanction is immediate. Van der Merwe crosses the field to register a try which revives his team (17 – 10, 50 e). But the UBB is not shaking. On the contrary, it quickly sets off again, since Lesgourgues, just entered the game, registered the third Girondin test following a nice collective action involving Lamerat, Radradra and Ducuing (24 – 10 58 e). Jalibert then widens the gap on penalty (27 – 10, 63 e).

At the end of the match, the UBB insists on going for the offensive bonus. On a 5th ball lost by the Scots in touch, the Girondins forwards multiply the “pick and go” in the 22 meters and Ravai forcefully registers the fourth try, synonymous with bonus (32 – 10, 72 e) . Bennett's late game try is anecdotal (32 – 17, 79 e), Bordeaux-Bègles holds its victory and its qualification.

Man of the match: Semi Radradra

He was expected on the decisive matches to allow the situations to be unblocked and to allow the UBB to pass the course of qualification. The Fijian international responded to the meeting. He registered the first try following a race of 50 m (50 e), before piercing the Scottish defense and serving Cordero for the second try (39 e). He was also involved in the third Gironde test entered by Lesgourgues (58 e).

The figure : 22

This is the number of points that counts the UBB in the classification of pool 3. Undefeated (4 wins, 1 draw), the Girondin club is guaranteed to finish in first place.
